9th Grade To Do List
  • Make sure you are choosing the most challenging courses available to you.
  • Work hard this year on your GPA (Grade Point Average), this year it begins to count for college
  • Begin creating a portfolio: List all activities, leadership positions, awards, etc on a computer disc.  Save any certificates, report cards, transcripts, etc in a file
  • Commit to leadership opportunities and extracurricular activites that you enjoy and that you will excel in
  • Create goals you would like to achieve over the next four years: write them down and save them in a safe place
  • Begin looking into summer progams and job opportunities that you would learn from and enjoy.
  • Most importantly, keep up your grades!

10th Grade To Do List

  • Take the PLAN test in November at VCS, which is the preliminary ACT.  This will help you know which academic areas need more attention compared to other students in the nation who will be entering college when you do. 
  • Take the PSAT in October at VCS, which is the preliminary SAT.  This is practice for the college preparatory test, the SAT and the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test which  you is the PSAT taken your junior year. 
  • Continue to maintain good grades and the most challenging academic courses you can handle. 
  • Continue to maintain your portfolio: activities, leadership positions, awards, etc.
  • Evaluate your goals from your freshman year--make any necessary changes
  • Commit to another extracurricular activity that you enjoy and will excel in.
  • Look into summer programs or job opportunities you would learn from and enjoy. 
  • Look into taking a college visiting trip this summer to see various colleges you would be interested in attending.
  • Always maintain good character at work and in any extracurricular activity you are doing!

11th Grade To Do List

  • Take the PSAT, the Preliminary SAT.  This is a college aptitude test which test your reasoning skills.  This will be given in October of your junior year.  This is also the National Merit Qualifying Test, which if you score at a certain level can give you significant scholarship dollars.
  • Begin narrowing down your college choices to 4-5.
  • Sign up to take the ACT and SAT this at least once this year.  All colleges require one of these tests for admission.
  • Continue to maintain your portfolio of activities, awards, and achievements
  • Sign up for ACT and SAT Prep courses
  • Ask your counselor to talk with you about various careers you are interested in and take a career interest inventory.
  • Maintain good grades.
  • Begin looking to see which scholarships your will possibly be eligible for your senior year.
  • Look into summer programs and jobs you would enjoy.
  • Talk with your parents about their ideas about your gifts, what colleges they like and finanical expectations

12th Grade To Do List

  • Continue to keep up your Grade Point Average
  • Keep in close contact with your counselor as she will be aware of all the latest information with scholarships, college representative visits, etc. 
  • Take the ACT and SAT--Take it until you are satisfied with your score--schools will take your highest score.  You can take it as many times as you like.
  • Narrow colleges to 2-3 and visit those colleges inquiring about your intended field of study and any scholarships you would be eligible for.
  • Make personal contact and your best impression with your top 3 colleges, if possible. 
  • Prepare a calendar for your senior year with all college application, scholarship, financial aid and fee deadlines. 
  • Ask teachers or counselors in advance to write recomendations letters.
  • Research and apply for all scholarships you are eligible for.  Every bit of money is helpful to cover the expense of college! 
    Keep up with deadlines, fill out all applications for admission and scholarship and enjoy your senior year!
