Financial Aid & Scholarship Scams
The start of the financial aid season, when people should apply for financial aid for college, will be upon
us soon. It is also the time of year when scholarship scammers start advertising their phony scholarship services.
Unfortunately, in their efforts to pay the bills, many students and their families are falling prey to
scholarship scams. The Federal Trade Commission cautions students to look for tell tale lines:
• “The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back.” • “You can’t
get this information anywhere else.” • “We’ll do all the work.” • “The
scholarship will cost some money.” • “I just need your credit card number or bank account number
to hold this scholarship.” • “You’re a finalist” in a contest you never entered. • “You’ve
been selected by a ‘national foundation’ to receive a scholarship.
Families do not need to pay someone to apply for and receive financial aid for college. Several avenues
to receive help include the local high school guidance office, financial aid administrator at a college.
